Work for the Xcetera typeface started with the desire to create a classical serif design but using the less contrasted stroke thickness found in a host of sans serif designs. My aim was to retain some of the clarity found in modern strokes yet use the serifs to aid in letter recognition and legibility. The result is a form of hybrid design that is surprising clear in small point sizes yet offer a lot of personality in larger formats. Suited for both display and text settings, Xcetera aims to be both functional and fun while looking to explore new possibilities for the classical typeface style.

Asphalt Font Family
Asperity, Asphalt and Aspic, were designed for Another magazine issues 18 and 19, A typeface in three versions, Hard, Soft and Script, three typefaces with the same character shape, where hard is angular, Soft is brushlike, and Script a painted-ish connected design. For Asphalt, Aspic’s brushy forms are connected into an expressive, striking script typeface. It has a feeling of having been painted by a sign writer, with a brush dipped in too much paint as it has a gloopy, fluid but still readable, quality. Signwriting is seemingly a dying craft, but as with other crafts outmoded by technology or the needs of speed and cheapness of delivery, it is highly revered. At its best it is hugely skilful, quirky, idiosyncratic and expressive. It can occasionally be naive and amateurish, but that’s good too. In a retail environment of familiar brands, any opportunity for individual expression should be cherished.

Trim Font Family
Knud V. Engelhardt (1882–1931) was an architect, printer and designer from the country of our laid back neighbors, Denmark. Knud’s characteristic letter forms have already made a strong impression on some modern typefaces. Most notably is probably Skilt Gothic by a fellow Swedish compatriot, where Knuds way of trimming the diagonal stems is one of the spices used to give the typeface its character. Fighting against the desire to make something similar, this new typeface instead takes the concept to a whole new level by trimming not only diagonals, but all possible letters! The result is something – different. Trim comes in a large family including manually hinted webfonts and high quality desktop fonts. Some are fat, some are skinny and some are just lagom.

Peleguer typeface is the reinterpretation of the characters that the valencias goldsmiths Peleguer Manuel, father and son had opened and merged between 1779 and 1783 on behalf of the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Land of Valencia “in order to create a Factory letters. Then during that time, reached 6 degrees of open letters (small pica, pica, gross pica, text, great primer and double pica).It appears that the letters never were done, and were themselves Manuel Peleguer who kept the punches and dies, leading to create a foundry-printing which only came out 5 or 6 books or documents for the single year of 1784 . One of these books, “Praise in the solemn funeral service …” made ??with the degree of “gross pica” samples were selected to take the characters for subsequent drawings on the following parameters for the unity and a contemporary look to the source: Keep the proportions of the original source (but unifying the shapes of the serifs, as these were different according to repose at baseline or in descending order). Match the counterforms and match the fallen traces from the cursive. En short, “catch” the formal essence of the source and following update current typographic design criteria to achieve a source with good legibility and subtle personality.

The Unit Gothic series was released by Hamilton Manufacturing Co. in 1907. This late 19th century design conjures up early 20th century Dutch DeStijl lettering with a mostly strict adherence to right angles and minimal stroke modulation. Geometric began its life as a metal typeface from the Central Type Foundry, circa 1884. Soon after, this design was officially licensed to Morgans & Wilcox and was shown in their 1890 catalog in Regular, Light and Condensed Light variations. After acquiring Morgans & Wilcox, Hamilton Manufacturing offered Geometric Light Face Condensed as their own No 3020 and the Geometric Light Face as No 3021. HWT Geometric has been expanded digitally to include a Regular Condensed version. A heavier wood type specimen was found from an unknown manufacturer and digitized as it was found, resulting in the HWT Geometric Shopworn and Shopworn Inked variations. These digital versions all include a full Western and Central European character set of over 380 glyphs.
