As with any attempt at a new typeface, you want to create something different. A difficult task as most legible fonts are based on something previous. Somatype isn't actually based on any particular font but it has unavoidable similarities to others. The important difference here being the distinctive quirk of the connection points going opposite to the norm; exemplified best by the lower case d & e.
Rosart Font Family
Rosart is a text typeface based on the specimen Jacques-François Rosart from 1768. Along the design a comparison with types of Pierre-Simon Fournier and Johan Fleischman was made to distill the idiosyncrasy of Rosarts letter forms.
Groovy Font
Groovy started out as a prospective variant in the ‘Flashback’ series but very quickly established its own distinct appearance, especially with the lower case letters blending into the format so well. There wasn't any preconceived idea to design a retro looking font in principle, it simply evolved that way, but I do think it has several characteristics reminiscent of style genres from the '70s. It’s probably quite subliminal and like me, you may find yourself thinking, what does that remind me of?
Diocletian Typeface
Inspired by one of the most imposing heritage of the late Roman empire, this typeface captures the essence and glory of the Diocletian’s palace. Emperor Diocletian built the palace in the turn of the 4th century AD on the picturesque south coast of the Illyrian province, todays Dalmatia region, Croatia. The ancient palace has become the old town of Split, bursting with lively cafes, restaurants, shops, hotels and apartments.
