Charles Percy Bluemlein was a Brooklyn-based calligrapher who, in the 1930’s, created quirkily distinctive alphabets based on the autographs and writing samples of friends and acquaintances. These alphabets first appeared in a catalog promoting printers’ ink, and even formed the basis of some early photo-typesetting alphabets.

Though forgotten for decades, these starkly original alphabets deserved broader exposure. Beginning in 2006, Alejandro Paul painstakingly expanded and updated the characters into highly usable digital typefaces, including complete character sets, punctuation, and alternates.

The Best of Bluemlein gathers the top 20 of these Bluemlein faces into a versatile, yet historically cohesive, package that evokes the craftsmanship and style of the early to mid-20th century, while avoiding the overused typographic cliches of the era.
