Central Avenue Font
Central Avenue was originally created for the graphic identity of an exhibition celebrating Birmingham’s infamous 1886 exhibition of Local Manufacturers and Natural History. The core of the identity was the bespoke typeface that we created based on the hand-painted signs from the original exhibition. The typeface style that they employed wasn’t the typical decorative Victorian face, it was a simple sans serif – much more industrial and much more relevant for a contemporary exhibition of its kind. What was essential was to not loose the essence of the original designs through digitising. We wanted to make sure that we managed to retain some of the awkwardness and personality that the hand painted letter forms had. Rather than imagining the lowercase characters, we decided to keep it ‘Victorian’ and designed a superscripted alternative that enables the user to create their own word logos.
Lisbon Font
Lisbon is a geometric stencil typeface based on an original metal stencil that Burrill found in a sign makers shop in Lisbon, Portugal. The font was first used in a series of posters commissioned by the British Council for Experimenta cultural biennale in Lisbon (2010). A lower case and punctuation has been developed from the original upper case, using the same strict geometric rules as the original.

Coronamatic 67 is a typewriter font inspired by the manuscripts of Jack Kerouac. Jack typed up to 110+ words a minute, so to make things move faster he would type on long scrolls of paper. That sense of speed, and the editorial feel of the serif letter design from the 1960's, brings some of the old into the new with this genuine typewriter font.

Burgess Font Family
Burgess is an idiosyncratic and subjective reinterpretation of midcentury Photostat cuts of Times New Roman Bold & Bold Italic. While Times was initially said to have been drawn for the the British newspaper The Times in 1931 by Victor Lardent and Stanley Morison, several type historians believe the design was based on an earlier work by the American industrial designer William Starling Burgess. Burgess, whose own drawing purportedly dates to 1904, was known primarily for his contributions to aviation and maritime histories, as well as his later-life collaborations with figures like Buckminster Fuller. Burgess was drawn specifically for FIVE YEARS by the members of Colophon Foundry. Burgess and Burgess Italic are distributed digitally in Open-Type (.OTF) format. Both weights contain Latin-A and Central European support, as well as a special set of glyphs drawn especially for FIVE YEARS.

In April 2009 The Entente was commissioned to design an on-going identity for artist and printmaker, Jake Spicer. The project’s bespoke typeface, was re-cut multiple times over a period of 9 months (becoming a personal labour of love), before arriving at the current commercial cut. The name ‘Fortescue’ is derived from a dwelling in Sidmouth, Devon, England where Spicer began his career. The Pro set comes complete with extended characters for use in Eastern & Central European languages. Full OpenType features include contextual ligatures, discretional ligatures, superior & inferior numbers, fractions, oldstyle proportional figures, proportional and tabular lining figures and a full set of small caps.
